Thurday 23 - Wednesday29
Don't forget to read WEEK 44... Part 1 if you haven't done so!!
IT HAPPENED ON CHRISTMAS DAY...
TUESDAY'S FROSTING.
12 GRAPES.
Sunday, the 26 th.. Alonso was mesmerized by the snowy view! Later that day
mommy would take him out, and play for the first time with snow.
I sure wish I would have been there. But...I had to go to work. BLAH! It would
have been great to stay home, see Alonso enjoy playing outside, start a fire to
warm up afterward , and relax the rest of the day.
However, grateful that I have a job, I carefully walked down my driveway and got
in my very cold, snow covered, uglier by the day, purple car. I pushed those warm
thoughts away, and off to work I went. There was lots to admire while I drove.
I wished I could have stopped the car, and taken a moment to admire the beauty
(But as always time was of the essence). Nothing like morning sunshine
reflecting on fresh snow...
At work the day flew by. People were renting movies left and right! They were
also talking about the latest news in town left and right. Sad news. Very sad.
And it happened on Christmas day!
Fire lieutenant, pregnant daughter shot in domestic dispute.
I was in shock to hear this. Really shocked because, although I didn't know
Todd personally, he and his family, came frequently to shop at Ingles...but above
all shocked because I could not imagine a young, 21year old, mother- to-be
going through something this traumatic....because of an affair, drinking, and a rifle.
I hope they will find a way to heal...my prayers go out to them.
Monday rolled by. My main thought for that day, how to get around to writing.
One post takes me days...I DON'T HAVE THE TIME. But my mind was set on
working on my last "WEEKS". Definitely, after putting Alonso to bed, I would
do it. I would sit down and write.
Wrong!!
When I started to write, I had the feeling I was forgetting something....hmmmm....
hmmmm....did I have anything special this week? Tuesday popped in my mind.
What!! TUESDAY!!! I had a Wilton class on TUESDAY...that meant TOMORROW.
Oh, gosh..it was past 10:00 P.M. GAAAHHHHHH!!!
Let me tell you I ran to the kitchen, baked cupcakes, whipped up the frosting, and
prepared my bag like there was no tomorrow!
Oh, yes! I prepared this wonderful frosting for Tuesday evening. Well, you know
what happened? After work the next day, I went home...changed quickly...drove
all the way to Snellville...and... at Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts I was told the class
was cancelled.
On the way back home I did a lot of thinking....especially on writing in this blog. I
needed to simplify my life and write shorter posts. I needed to go back to
FOOD STORIES and stick to that, or I would never finish the book.
Conclusion: At the beginning of the year I will post only once a week..that is,
once I get the promised posts out of the way...
One thing that I will not change is checking my facebook account. The
photos and family comments are a must to stay in touch with the ones in the
States, and the ones in Spain...I don't feel as lonely.
Wednesday 29...My thoughts wondered to Spain. Everyone getting ready to
celebrate New Years Eve. Everyone buying the traditional grapes. I have no plans.
I mean NO plans. For the first time in my life I will not be eating the 12 grapes
at midnight.
What 12 grapes? You must be asking. Here is an article I found, that explains it.
Eating 12 Grapes on New Year's Eve in Spain

For a long time, Spanish people have had a traditional
custom of celebrating New Year's Eve. On the last day of
the year, the 31st of December, they wait until twelve
p.m. Everybody has to have twelve grapes ready to eat
when the clock starts to chime. It is traditional to eat
them as you hear the clock from Puerta del Sol in Madrid
chiming.
When it is midnight, each time the clock chimes, they put
a grape in their mouth. By the time the clock has finished
chiming, everybody has to have finished their grapes and
the New Year starts, but nobody ever finishes eating the grapes on time.
Eating the grapes is very funny because everybody starts the New Year
with a full mouthful of grapes. It's almost impossible to finish eating the
grapes by the time the clock finishes chiming. Normally people still have all
the grapes in their mouths, and they start looking at each other and have
to laugh.
You can imagine what would happen if they laughed with all the grapes in
their mouths. It's really difficult to have a second to swallow them. I think you can
imagine the rest of the story.
This tradition started in Spain because one year when there was a big grape
harvest, the king of Spain decided to give grapes to everybody to eat on New Year's
Eve.
