Last year my grandson, Alonso, was only 16 months old at Christmas time.
Being so little he didn't participate in any of the Christmas tree decorating...
This year... was a whole different story!
Alonso, was excited to see the Christmas tree in the living room. Wow,
something new to play with. And, not only that...but strings with little, colorful
lights...shiny ornaments with curved sticks on the end, and a very long, long,
long, bright red necklace. He looked curiously at the necklace and thought,
must be Yaya's...
He grabbed one of the plastic bags filled with little red balls and jumped up and
down while letting out shouts of joy. Alonso, is just now beginning to speak a
few words, so between body language and voice tones ...he communicates
quite well. Oh, yes...he was saying in his own way, " Hey, Mommy, can I help
decorate the Christmas tree this year? I am a big boy now...I am TWO years
old!! Let me do it ...let me do it!!
Mommy Sandra, opened the bag for him and gave it back saying, "Alright
young man... here...you can start with these!"
Alonso looked at one and wondered how it worked...
Mommy explained the process of hanging an ornament. He quickly stood up,
stood in front of the tree and tossed all of the "balls" at it. Proud of what he
had accomplished, he clapped. "Nice job!! Alonso!!" Mommy and Yaya, said as
they applauded his decorating flare. Since he did so well with the little ones....
it was time to go on to bigger things!! Mommy handed him a bag of
red pointy ornaments...
WOOOOOOO!! He said, these are cool... they SWING!!
Mommy then reminded him once more... that the ornaments were supposed to
be hung in the tree...He thought, why hang them? My way is soooo much
faster! And he tossed them at the tree...Any way, Mommy Sandra and Yaya
Juani were laughing...AND he did hear them say the tree was looking very
"original"!!
Alonso, then wondered if his teddy bear could go in the tree. Mommy said, "Sure
...why not!" He tossed that in too...but it bounced off the tree. Yaya came to the
rescue and stuffed it in the tree to his delight.
There was a bag filled with pretty, white ornaments, and he handed the bag to
Mommy so she would open it for him. But Mommy said in a firm tone....
" NO...not those, Alonso. Only
Mommy or Yaya Juani can put
those up because they break...
just do the red ones."
She went into the kitchen to get
him some milk and said, "Be good
and don't move....just sit there
OK?
And he did...he sat there. He sat there
with the red ornaments. But those
white balls were TOO tempting...and
he could reach them while just
sitting there...
So he grabbed the bag, and thrilled tossed some around!! Crack, crack, crack...
At the sound of breaking glass, Mommy Sandra, came running out of the kitchen.
"Oh, Alonso, you need to listen to what I say!" And she started cleaning the
mess...
OOOPS!!! I think Mommy is not too happy with me right now....I better put these
balls back in the bag!! I don't want any time out...
After Mommy cleaned up everything was good again, and he continued decorating
some more....but with Yaya's necklace! Around and around the tree it went...
When he was done....he stopped to admire the tree....and thought it looked
MAGNIFICENT!! Mommy and Yaya thought so too...After all, nothing like little
helpers to make things GRAND!!
Later on that evening, Alonso, looked at the tree and figured something
very important was missing...He thought, Oh, I know!!, and ran to his
room. When he returned,Alonso, added his very own personal touch....
P.S. Alonso was supervised at all times, but he broke the ornament before I was able to put
my camera on the floor!
